Derek J. Enderlin has spent his entire career practicing criminal law. Derek has even had a case accepted by the United States Supreme Court (See the news page for more details). We know of no other criminal defense lawyer in the upstate who has had a case accepted by the Supreme Court. The Court gets 10,000 petitions a year and only accepts 100. Derek began his career as a law clerk to the Honorable Alexander S. Macaulay where he saw hundreds of General Sessions pleas or trials. Immediately following he was an assistant solicitor for two years where he prosecuted every type of case. He was a part-time municipal judge where he presided over crimes like CDV and larceny. He was the juvenile public defender for four years where he represented juveniles charged with all types of crimes. He was the Chief Public Defender for Oconee County for four years. He has represented numerous individuals in private practice including people facing the death penalty.

Derek was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1968. He attended the Citadel the Military College of South Carolina where he was a Citadel Scholar and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1990. He took a year off and was a white water raft guide on the Chattooga River in Oconee County and he travelled to Africa and Europe. He attended the University of South Carolina Law School where he was the Sinkler, Boyd and Gibbes Scholarship recipient and graduated in 1994.

He is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and has been a Board of Director for that organization. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, the American Council of Chief Defenders, and the Oconee County Bar of which he is a past president. He was appointed by the Governor to the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense by nomination of the South Carolina Public Defender President and served on that Commission for two (2) years and helped create the Statewide public defender system. He currently serves on the ACCD Committee on System Reform for public defense systems. He is also vice chairman of Keep Greenville County Beautiful.

Derek has had many jury trials over his career, including, DUS, murder, criminal sexual conduct (Rape), Burglary, larceny, various assaults and aggravated assaults, possession of drugs and distribution of drugs and has represented at least a thousand other individuals charged with criminal offenses resulting in guilty pleas, dismissal of their charges, or reduction of their charges. He has represented people charged with crimes in Family Court, General Sessions Court, Magistrate and Municipal Court, the Court of Appeals of South Carolina and the South Carolina Supreme Court.
